Side. Side.. Side... Side....!

It was raining very heavily. It always does in Mumbai.  Rain soaked Mumbai people run for their daily living.

I was standing on a railway bridge hoping for my train to come on time as it was already 0925 am on Monday morning.

Railways announced for arrival of Ladies Special train, this train makes our lives hell as next few trains arriving after this will be overcrowded due to this filler.

A beautiful girl in her twenties, yes all girls are beautiful in their twenties or otherwise, took charge running on the bridge shouting side, side, side, side and started getting down the stairs.

People (read all men) politely gave way to her to get down from the left side on the stairs. The girl with her sleeveless T-shirt, tight jeans and bag hanging in one hand with other hand occupied with umbrella making way towards the ladies special.

'Dhupaak', the girl slipped on one of the stairs, however nobody dared extending helping hand to her.

General public psychology with girls, remember in public transport bus the lady behind you pushes or pats on your shoulder and asks you, do you want to get down on the next stop?, have you heard a man doing this with ladies?

Fortunately she didn't hurt herself.

She got off and started running again for the train shouting Side. Side.. Side... Side....!

Did she get the train after all?
No idea, I was taken over by another girl passing by ;-)

Trek to “Karnala Fort” - February 06, 2010

After many days, the idea of trekking popped up in the minds of my techie colleagues. I, Devendra, Shailesh, Nikhil and Pooja, all of us decided to make it happen.

Karnala fort closer to Panvel and supposed to be a basic trek in nature was the final cut.

Devendra, Shailesh being the frequent trekker, at least once in a month.  I, once in 6 months and for Nikhil and Pooja it was a maiden experience.
Four of us decided to meet at Matunga Bridge at 0530 hrs to begin our journey to Panvel where Shailesh was to join us.  I started at 0400hrs to meet Nikhil at Goregaon and he drove us to Matunga, where we parked his car and joined Devendra in his car.

By 0615hrs we were with Shailesh to hit the road for Karnala Sanctuary.  On our way we took a Tea Break just after Panvel, much needed one.  It was relatively pleasant outside.

0645hrs, we were at the gates of Karnala Bird Sanctuary.  There was nobody at the gates. We parked our car in the parking lot where ample parking was available. Apart from us one more couple from Vashi was there and it was the first ever trek for the lady.

It was quite dark outside.  We started walking into the jungle! Not yet, the passage towards the base of the mountain was starting with cement road and the journey began.

After navigating thru the nature’s beauty, trees, rocks and of course monkeys we reached to a plane road of mud and stones to witness the sunrise thru bushes.  The sunrays were warm and welcoming.

The road ahead was straight, we were still very fresh due to short breaks in between and our baby steps towards our goal.

In a short while we reached towards the bottom of the fort. Now what needed is to climb the small but curvy patch followed by steps to enter the fort. The steps were having railing to hold the balance.

The couple from Vashi was just behind us, the girl has taken lots of motivation from Pooja to reach here.

We entered the fort after clearing the hurdle and enjoyed the view from there.  From top, we saw group of school children moving towards the base of the fort appeared as if an army of tiny soldiers is marching towards the fort.

We have freshened up ourselves with water from one of the ponds there.  The natural water was clean and drinkable. After having our lunch we rested for some time and resumed our journey to the base but from a different and much easier road this time. (As told to us by other trekkers who came from that road).

The road was pretty straight with not many ups and downs. After reaching the base we rested for some time waiting for Shailesh and Pooja to join us. It was nice to see small children there enjoying lunch and tackling monkeys from stealing their food.

Though it was a sanctuary, there were hardly any birds seen, may be due to vehicle noise generated by passing highway.

We then headed to ‘Kshanabhar Vishranti’ hotel on our way back to eat Malvani Chicken Rassa and Bhakari with Solkadhi and Masala Pan. This was followed by nice and warm cup of tea- courtesy Shailesh’s family.

I was at home by 1700hrs with not much exertion and pain.

Facts: Pooja being the senior colleague with 25+ years of experience in the industry showed great courage to join us in her maiden trek with great fitness levels to conquer the Karnala Fort that has added one feather to her hat.
No doubt she was the inspiration for the girls who were following her on this trek to the Karnala fort.

Verdict: Doable trek by all, must do and enjoy.

Balaji Darshan

I never thought I will ever visit to Tirupati to take blessings from Lord Venkateswara. But it was written and I was taken to Thirumala.

I am in Chennai to work at a client side. One of the friends from this place had been to Tirupati last weekend with his family. Till this moment I wasn’t aware that Tirupati is that close to Chennai. January 31, 2009

I went to book a ticket of southern travels to Chennai Central station but could not locate one. So I have booked a ticket for me thru SRS Travels for Tirupati. The agent showed us a framed picture of Volvo and also informed that a small room will be provided in the morning for getting freshened up.

I reached at the Central station @ 2100hrs. One more Bengali guy like me on a business tour was waiting for the bus. We were boarded on to a bus which took us to the Private transporters bus stand.

The bus left @ 2230 hrs. All of us went to sleep. Around 0230 hrs we reached to Reniguntha in Andhra Pradesh, the transit location where we can buy a ticket for Venkateswara darshan.
February 01, 2009

We stood in the queue for nearly 3 hrs and my number came at 0530 hrs. The computer thru which the tickets are booked were operated by three people. One to hold your finger on to the Finger print scanner, one for web cam and one to hit the enter key on keyboard.

When the link went down for some time we were really worried if it can come up soon. I don’t understand why a rich devasthan have another computer installed as a backup and ensure the connectivity to the server.

We moved to our temporary halt in one of the hotels in Tirupati. We were given a single room, yes I and the Bengali guy had to share a room for half an hour to get freshen up. We then headed for breakfast.

One of the local busses were to take us to the temple, I got my bag and slippers as my another new friend Ramesh, who also wanted to get his long hair devoted to the devasthan as a tradition told to me that we have to take bath and get all our cloths changed after that. I had already taken bath but then I wasn’t aware of this before. He told me to be with him always till the end of our journey.

We boarded to the local bus and reached the temple in an hour’s time thru the Ghats. The bus driver was really crazy as he was rash driving the bus and even over taking where it was strictly prohibited and blowing horn to get side was so often. The road was properly built and safer than the difficult Ghats of Maharashtra.

We got down from the bus for getting our hair cut. I left my slippers in the bus and asked my Bengali friend to look after in case the bus leaves.

Our guide took us to the hall where the hair cut takes place. Within no time the hair were gone and we were ready to visit the temple. After getting the hair cut all were putting sandal wood paste on to the head for beating the sun. I too got hold of some to beat the sun.

We came back to our group and to my surprise the bus wasn’t there and so my slippers.

We stood in a queue unaware of how many hours after my number will come for darshan. We got our clearance thru the security they verify the ticket which is bar-coded then your picture appears on screen.

We kept moving on and on and on. Walking thru narrow corridors sailing with the sea of people all were submerged to get a glimpse of their god.

We moved close to the temple, a beautiful temple covered fully with layers of gold everywhere on the walls, roofs of temple. I moved with the crowd and from a distance I could see the erected idol of Venkateswara. A small ghee lamp was burning inside the temple. The main temple is very much inside where no body is allowed to enter, however we could see the Venkateswara from a distance. The peace one can observe just by looking at the idol can only be experienced by being there and there itself.

We returned back to our hotel and I bought a new pair of floaters. After taking lunch we all headed to Chennai. Ramesh then hired a rickshaw for me to bring me back to my hotel.

I was all happy and still experiencing the peace of mind.

July 26, 2005 (the bloodiest monsoon Mumbai has ever seen

July 26, 2005 (the bloodiest monsoon Mumbai has ever seen

The previous night was tiresome. I could not sleep as the train was in motion and making lots of noise in sleeper compartments. I was returning from Baroda after attending the problems faced by the customers there.
I reached home early morning and took a nap for a while as I wanted to go to office in the afternoon.

I took a local train from Kandivali. It was raining cats and dogs. I reached Matunga Road rail station my destination. The platform was not crowded much but I could see college crowd on platform, may be colleges have closed early due to heavy rains.

I also met Dr. Ajit Naik, on platform, my professor from Ruparel College. He was returning home. I don’t know what struck me on that day that I went for office and when he offered me to join him on his way back to Kandivali I readily accepted his offer and we boarded back into train bound to Kandivali. But that day was different, not much rush in train. Sir has introduced me to one of his present student from Physics department Bhargav. Now there were three of us together. We cracked jokes and the train was just cruising to the destination. We reached closer to Ville Parle station & next were Bhargav’s station Andheri.

However the train came to halt 50 meters ahead of Ville Parle station and we could see another train halting inside the station. The situation was same on the fast lane tracks too. Before we could realize there ware chains of trains before and after. The rain water was filling in tracks at slower rate. There was water logged as usual outside on roads. We could not fathom the situation yet.

People started jumping out the train as it appeared that the train will not move. We also decided to jump & we jumped to walk towards the rail crossing at Ville Parle. The water was just above the ankle level but towards the SV Road side it was knee deep many places.

We reached towards the SV Road to find that the traffic too has come to standstill. Only buses and bigger vehicles were moving at snails pace. The sides of roads were logged with knee deep water and every one was walking on the road dividers. The water was flowing all over the road and it was not steady. The water currents were displacing the pedestrians.

We started walking towards Andheri as Bhargav’s home was just next to Irla Bridge. We thought of going to his home to spend night or at least till the water levels goes down. On our way to Irla we could see one of the lecturers from Ruparel College accompanied by one of the Junior college girl student in a Bus standing on road. They also decided to join us to Bhargav’s home. We passed by Sony Mony & proceeded towards Andheri. The Irla Bridge now was in sight. As we walked closer towards the bridge the water level started rising. Being 5 feet 11, I & Sir were in waist deep water. I can now imagine about the lecturer madam and the Junior college girl.

We changed the course of our initial plan and moved to Irla petrol pump. All the hotels & shops around were closed. Bhargav moved ahead to cross the bridge, we could have done so but we decided not to leave our friends behind. Bhargav was told to keep hot tea & some eatables ready for us in case we decided to cross the bride with the help of the volunteers assisting people to cross the bridge from sides by holding the ropes. Water level was nearly 5 feet plus near the bridge.

We four along with a crowd of people assembled at the petrol pump. My cell phone was still working. All of us have called up our homes to inform about our where about. My mother called me to inform that she is safe and going to BMC building opposite BSES hospital at Andheri for night shelter.
The intensity of rains accompanied by thunders was scaring. All types of people were assembled at the petrol pump right from small time hawkers to owners of luxurious cars, from Small school children with there rickshawallas to college going youngsters. The children were very much panicked and were crying for their parents. The hawker and other people offered them biscuits’ water & comfort. People were getting eatables and water bottles and were distributing them to others at no cost. People staying by were also offering shelter and eatables.

This is the spirit of Mumbai city that was keeping everybody together even at this worst of times. People earlier boarded in the bus were alighting and crossing the bride.

It was 12 AM now, midnight. My cell phone battery was now going down as apart from us I offered others to make an emergency call to their homes. I switched off the cell phone to conserve battery for the morning emergencies. Most of the cellular networks were down due to rains & over trafficking of calls. There was water everywhere and many places there was no electricity available.
We boarded a nearly empty bus bound to Borivali bus station. We could easily get place to sit. It was over midnight. The intensity of rains now reduced but not stopped. The water levels were now going down. Our Bus now started to crawl towards destination. It was to take a route from Andheri flyover to Borivali-east.

After making way through heavy traffic we reached to Andheri East and ten to western express highway. It was no pleasure ride, there too water was logged everywhere and road was full with pedestrians & small cars floating around which were left behind by their owners.
Some how we managed to go pass Goregaon Checknaka Junction. Driver had to skip the Dindoshi Depot.

It was 6 AM of July 27, 2005. We got down at the junction of Tata on western express highway. Now only I and Sir were there. No buses around we decided to walk down towards our home. We crossed the Kora kendra flyover and headed to link road. After walking for an hour or so we reached to our homes.
The long night has come to an end. Although it was raining outside but the intensity was not there. The water logs are now getting cleared. All the vehicles left behind were on road.
All the Mumbaikars have helped each other in this crisis.
It was 944.2 mm of record rainfall which left Cherapunji behind as the highest monsoon receiver.

Long Live Spirit of Mumbai!!!

My Journey to New Office

2nd June 2008, my first day at new office near Safed pool- Andheri - East. Coming to Sakinaka from Kandivali – West and then going to Safed Pool was a tiring journey. Now I have to do it everyday for next couple of years. Hence, I decided to try out all possible routes to come to my new office.

In my last 9 years of travel to my old office in Matunga Road, I always had the pleasure of going return from Kandivali to Borivali and then to Matunga Road sitting or napping in train

Routes tried to go to new office

Boarded bus no 398 from Kandivali –East. The bus goes via Dindoshi & then via Aarey colony. It took 1 hour to reach to Sakinaka and then 10 minutes to Safed Pool in a Kurla Bus.

Tookbus no 388 which starts from Poinsur Depot and goes till Andheri –West on SV Road and then takes the Andheri Flyover to go to Safed Pool. It took me 1 hr 45 minutes to reach to office.
Took a train to Andheri Station 20 (minutes) and then bus no 332 from Andheri –East. Although there were plenty of 332 buses one after another, it then creates shortage of buses for some time. It’s a difficult task to come out of station from the foot over bridge. There were two ques for the bus, one of sitting and one of standing passengers and hence the chaos while boarding the bus. Bus took ½ hr to Safed pool. (Of course after waiting for 20-25 minutes at bus stop for my number to come.

Fourth route, I joined my colleague from office at Dindoshi. We then reached office in 45 minutes in his car and for me in 1 hour.

Same thing I repeated while coming back from Office to Home.

I tried several routes to come back home includes

Go with office colleague in his car to Kandivali – East highway via Aarey colony; take a bus to station; cross the level crossing at rail station; take another bus to home.

Go with office colleague in his car to Goregaon Check Naka via Aarey colony, take a bus from Checknaka to Goregaon –East station; take a train to Kandivali; take a bus to home.

Took a 388 bus which goes to Poinsur depot via Andheri- West S V Road.

Took a 488 bus which goes to Borivali- West via Goregaon – West S V Road.

Took a 332 bus go to Andheri – East rail station; take overcrowded train and get down at Kandivali; take a bus to home.

Took 332 bus go to Andheri – East rail station; went to Andheri- West, Took a bus till Jogeshwari station; got in to the train from Platform no 2 side.

But I enjoy going to office for, it always feels great to be in office with some new tasks waiting for you to complete. New friends and colleagues and the of course the Mavashi who serves us Tea as soon as we are on our table.
The beauty of nature which I get to enjoy on my way through Aarey colony makes the journey a new adventure everytime.

And of course the fastest route to go to office and come back is to own a vehicle or take a train to Andheri and then a bus. (Presuming that the train and bus will be on time and you get the first preference)

IPL Mumbai Indians Lost again

Its a loss again for Mumbai Indians, After a nail biting fight ( Sachin why do you always keep biting your nails) RR managed to win the match to continue their winning race.

We were in the same situation when our newcomers have failed us to clinch us a victory to qualify for the semis.

Now at least win the last of the matches or hope that CSK lose their match to help us move up in the table. Some more booster needs for the Mumbai Indians.

Sachin please share the secret of your energy with everybody else, oh Yes Boost was the secret of your energy.

All the best.
